Canvas

In 2005, Lise Saint-Cyr discovers watercolor on canvas. Different from paper, this support will bring her freedom and a new spontaneity. She develops a technique with a figurative style on an abstract background. Without any pre-drawing she brings out figures on washes that she applied with free-flowing gestures, with no pre-conceived ideas, letting herself be guided by her emotions. That first background will then determine the subject. Working mostly negatively, the forms will appear, the subject will take shape but the effect will stay fluid and loose. “I tried acrylic ink on those canvases but no medium better than watercolor can bring this light and transparency, like on paper the white is not applied with pigment, but it is the support beneath and that is what gives to this difficult and extraordinary luminosity.” (The watercolor on canvas are varnished and don’t require a glass of protection.).
